Innovation Process

There are many routes to business innovation. Some innovations result from formal R&D programmes; others through incremental, on-the-job improvements in practice or informal exchanges of ideas and professional expertise. Whatever the route taken, the innovation 'journey' is likely to go through a similar process:

Of course, it is too simplistic to claim that all inventions have to go through exactly the same process. However, research over the past twenty years has identified repeating themes and patterns that often inhibit the commercialisation of inventions. NISE will work with you to plan the development of your idea and avoid / overcome these potential pitfalls, which may include:

  1. Constantly shifting priorities and short-term thinking
  2. Internal process focus rather than external customer focus
  3. Under-funding of new ideas in the name of sustaining current efforts
  4. Workforce workloads (i.e. too much to do, not enough time)
  5. Risk aversion (i.e. punishment for "failure")
  6. Inadequate understanding of potential market requirements and customers
