NHS Innovations South East (NISE) is an innovations and intellectual property (IP) management service available to NHS bodies (NHS Trusts & PCTs) in the counties of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hampshire/IOW, Surrey, Sussex, Kent and Medway.
Recognising the important role organisations outside the NHS in both the public and private sectors play in facilitating healthcare innovation, NISE brings together the worlds of industry, academia and the health service to help convert innovative ideas into practical benefits for patients.
NISE is one of nine regional innovation hubs spanning the country. The hubs are funded jointly by Regional Development Agencies and Office of Science and Technology (OST) via the Public Sector Research Exploitation (PSRE) scheme and the Department of Health (DH).

Innovation Management
NISE works on a wide variety of innovations from medical devices and diagnostics to educational materials and computer software and acts as the link between industry and the NHS. NISE exists to identify innovations and potential innovations and
- ensures that they are evaluated and protected;
- seeks licensing partners to exploit the innovation;
- seeks-out potential commercial partners with the right mix of skills and experience.
Brokering Relationships
NISE facilitates relationships between NHS innovators and commercial parties. For example, thanks in no small measure to the wide range of expertise within Trusts and PCTs located within the South-East region; NISE can offer the validation that may be required by a commercial partner prior to making a major investment.
Consultancy
NISE occasionally acts as a consultancy, undertaking market research, offering advice on intellectual property or helping to commercialise healthcare innovations.
